Oh The Times They Are A-Changin'

So today was K1's first day of preschool. He marched himself in, hung his backpack in his special, reserved spot (and I might as well add here that the teacher was quite impressed he remembered his spot from finding it at orientation a few days ago), and sat right down to play. It was hard to even be bothered with a goodbye from Mommy. Though he did stand up and gave me a kiss and my emotions started to betray me... who knew I could get so veklempt from leaving my son for 2 1/2 hours!?! After all, I'm usually wishing/hoping/praying/fantasizing about some time away. I suppose it was the fact that he is getting older, and this just represents the first of many school milestones he will face.

The most exciting news of the day of course, is that he didn't have an accident in his pants. Since no pull ups are allowed at preschool, I sent him in regular underwear and held my breath. Sure, I know he knows how to use the potty, but knowing it and doing it are two different things. I was worried he might be distracted by all that is going on around him. Well, apparently I sufficiently put the fear of God into him because he stayed dry all through preschool, came home and promptly wet his pants. grrrr. It is times like these I comfort myself by remembering that there aren't any 30-year-old men out there who aren't potty trained. It will happen one day, right?

Aside from preschool he's also started soccer... a sport I am quite confident he will excel at because it involves two of his favorite things - running and balls. He played T-ball over the summer and though he loved it, I feel he may have the heart of a true soccer player (that or a long distance runner because I tell you, that kid can run). The coach sat the kids down in a circle at the start of practice and had them go around and tell their names. When it was time for K1 to share, he said "Yeah-Yeah" which is his nickname and the answer he gives when anyone asks what his name is. It's amazing at how many people will take a 3-year-old at his word. They often look to me as though I purposely named him Yeah-Yeah. Sometimes I don't even bother to explain it. Let them wonder.

In the meantime, K2 and I get lots of quality time together while big brother is away being... well, big. She misses him and often asks where he is, but I think in a few weeks when she gets this schedule down she'll be wishing he was gone more often. After all, its undivided mommy time and she gets to choose whatever program she wants on the tele. Soon enough she'll be headed to preschool as well and our cozy reality will once again be interrupted by the ever-passage of time.
